Download each app from the company that makes it
If you search for a ChatGPT or Claude download, the results can include ads and third-party sites that offer the app, sometimes bundled with other software. Get each app straight from the company that makes it: Download Claude and Download ChatGPT. These pages always offer the current installer, while a saved link to an older version can go out of date. Choose the desktop download for your operating system and follow the maker's steps. Then open the app, sign in, and start a conversation to confirm it works.
Each app offers more than one way of working. The Claude app includes chat, Cowork for handing off tasks, and Claude Code for software projects. The ChatGPT app includes chat, Work for producing a finished result such as a report or slide deck, and for work that uses developer tools. Choose the mode that fits the job, then check what that mode requires. Features that use your computer's files or operate its apps need their own setup, which later lessons cover.
